Hilton Head spending $100K on tourism app

October 12, 2014

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — Hilton Head Island is spending $100,000 on a tourism app for smart phones, although some from the resort island community say that’s too much.

The Island Packet reports (http://bit.ly/1nibz4n) that the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce Visitor & Convention Bureau has received $100,000 from the town for the project.

A Canadian firm, Verb Interactive of Halifax, Nova Scotia, is developing the app that will list events, restaurants, hotels, shopping and other island attractions. It will be available for download next spring.

The chamber says the app will serve as a digital welcome center.

Town Councilman Marc Grant says the money could be better divided among several groups. And Jeff Udell, who owns a local marketing company, says he could have developed the app for a fraction of the price.
