FIRE LOOKOUTS

BOISE, Idaho — Fire-lookout towers perched atop remote, craggy peaks across the U.S. West may seem like quaint reminders of an era before satellites, smartphones and jet-propelled air tankers. Indeed, some of the structures are more than 100 years old. But with their lofty views and good old-fashioned human observation, fire lookouts play a crucial role in the nation’s front-line efforts to stop wildfires. By Keith Ridler. SENT: 912 words, photos.

— YELLOWSTONE-FIRE DANGER — Yellowstone National Park’s fire danger has reached a high ranking for the first time this year following several of weeks of sunny weather and curing vegetation.

— UNEMPLOYMENT RATE — Wyoming’s unemployment rate remains at 3.7 percent but is lower than it was a year ago. The Wyoming Department of Workforce Services reported Tuesday that the June jobless rate was the same as it was in May.

— WYOMING LOTTERY — The Wyoming Lottery has provided nearly $1.5 million in profits for distribution to state cities, towns and counties. It is the highest amount ever transferred during a quarter to the state since the launch of the Wyoming Lottery in 2014.

Senior strong safety Andrew Wingard, senior defensive end Carl Granderson and junior defensive tackle Youhanna Ghaifan were all selected to the 25-member team announced Tuesday.
