Pagliero Added to UML Staff
LOWELL -- Former Colgate University assistant hockey coach Juliano Pagliero has been hired to join Norm Bazin’s staff at UMass Lowell, sources tell The Sun.
Pagliero will reportedly start at UMass Lowell on Monday. A spot opened on UML’s staff last month when Cam Ellsworth became the head coach at Norwich University. Ellsworth spent seven seasons on Bazin’s staff, the last two as associate head coach.
Ellsworth drew rave reviews at UML, especially for his work with the River Hawk goaltenders. Under his tutelage, Connor Hellebuyck and Kevin Boyle developed into two of the better goalies in college hockey.
Pagliero also has a strong goaltending background. He spent the last three seasons at Colgate, where he primarily worked with the goaltenders and defense, as well as overseeing the program’s recruiting efforts.
Previously, Pagliero spent two seasons on the Holy Cross staff. Pagliero was instrumental in Charlie Finn leaving Colgate with a program-record 3,297 saves and for Matt Ginn setting a Holy Cross career saves record of 3,857.
A native of Dalroy, Alberta, Pagliero is a 2009 graduate of Niagara University, where he was a four-year goaltender. He was named the College Hockey America Player of the Year as a senior and led Niagara to the NCAA Tournament in 2008.
Pagliero will return to Colgate and Hamilton, N.Y., this winter. On Jan. 11-12, Colgate will host Pagliero and UMass Lowell for a pair of games.
Bazin has had a busy summer. In addition to hiring Pagliero, Bazin now has to replace Troy Thibodeau, who has decided to leave his duties as UML’s director of hockey operations to become an assistant coach for Tri-City of the United States Hockey League.
