No individual worker blamed for Texas county’s $525K scam
GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — An outside review has determined no individual employee is to blame for a Texas county’s loss of more than $525,000 through an electronic payment scam.
The Galveston County Daily News reports commissioners voted Monday to pursue surety bond claims against the county auditor, treasurer and purchasing agent seeking to recover some funds.
County Treasurer Kevin Walsh in June announced discovery of a wrongful electronic payment to someone online pretending to be with a Houston company doing road work.
Galveston County commissioners in July approved the review. Monday’s report found the blame did not rest with a “single department or a single individual” with the county. The departments have since changed their procedures.
Public officials in Texas are required to procure bonds before taking office. Premiums are paid by the county.
