Army 20, Rutgers 16
WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) _ Halfback William Lampley ran 10 yards for a third-quarter touchdown Saturday that provided the margin of victorty as Army beat Rutgers 20-16.
Lampley’s touchdown capped a 15-play, 60-yard drive, and halfback Clarence Jones ran in for a two-point conversion that made it 20-13 late in the third period.
Tom Angstadt kicked a 26-yard field goal for Rutgers early in the fourth quarter, and the Scarlet Knights moved to the Army 20 in the final minutes of the game. But on fourth-and-15 from the 26, quarterback Joe Gagliardi was sacked by Tom Malloy and Mike Lover for a 10-yard loss.
The victory lifted Army to 2-0 this season. Rutgers, which tied then-No. 3 Florida last week in its opener, is 0-1-1.
Gagliardi, who threw two fourth-quarter TD passes last week to produce the tie against Florida, replaced starter Eric Hochberg with a minute remaining in the first half. With two seconds left, Gagliardi threw a 36-yard scoring pass to split end Greg Raffaelli for a 13-12 halftime lead.
Both teams started the game with long touchdown drives. Rutgers took the opening kickoff and moved 80 yards with Hochberg capping the march with a 2- yard pass to tight end Scott Drake.
The Cadets took the ensuing kickoff and drove in 68 yards. Quarterback Rob Healy’s scored on a 1-yard run.
Army went ahead 9-6 later in the first quarter when cornerback John Thomson blocked a Rutgers punt of the end zone for a safety. Craig Stopa’s 47-yard field goal made it 12-6 in the second period.
