JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) _ Backup quarterback Jeremie Watkins threw two touchdowns and Corey Walker ran for another as Arkansas State put on a quick second-quarter scoring exhibition and then shut down Austin Peay 24-0 Saturday night.

The Indians (1-1) drove 71 yards before Walker punched in a 2-yard run at the start of the second quarter.

Darrell Baker then intercepted a pass from Austin Peay (0-1) quarterback Matt Hick, returning it 67 yards to Austin Peay’s 13-yard line. On the next play, Watkins hit Lennie Johnson for a touchdown.

After the Indians defense held Austin Peay again, Johnson returned a punt 37 yards to the Austin Peay 39. It took Watkins just one play to find J.J. Washington for the score.

Jeff Caldwell added a 32-yard field goal in the third quarter to cap the scoring.

The Indians’ defense allowed just 39 yards.

The ground-game shutdown overshadowed an otherwise busy passing day for Austin Peay. Hicks threw for 281 yards, completing 26 of 54 passes but also tossing three interceptions. He was sacked four times.
