December 29, 2018
Carrboro police blocked off a neighborhood on Dec. 27, 2018, as they negotiated with an armed man barricaded inside a Laurel Avenue home.

An armed man who barricaded himself inside a Carrboro home and held law enforcement at bay for 24 hours has surrendered, authorities said.

No shots were fired, and no injuries were reported.

The standoff started at about 4 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of Laurel Avenue, off Jones Ferry Road, when police tried to pick the unidentified man up to take him to a mental health facility.

Police evacuated several homes as they negotiated with the man through the night and into Thursday.

Authorities fired tear gas into the home Thursday afternoon in an effort to force the man out of the home.

Carrboro police and Orange County deputies cordoned off Laurel Avenue, affecting more than 20 homes.

One woman who lives in the neighborhood said she and her two children slept in their van after the evacuation.
