Liberia Weapons Cache Found
MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) _ Refugees returning from exile to a village in northern Liberia discovered a cache of heavy weapons buried beneath one of their houses, military officials said Friday.
The weapons were found under a burned-out house in the village of Zorzor, near the border with Guinea and about 125 miles north of the capital, Monrovia, a military officer said on condition of anonymity.
It was not known who had hidden the weapons, although the area was formerly used as a base by several rebel groups during the country’s 1989-96 war.
Many residents of the town have begun returning in recent months from Guinea, where they took refuge during the fighting and the early days of the peace agreement that followed.
President Charles Taylor has accused several of his former rivals of planning uprisings against the government.
In September, a clash between government soldiers and supporters of former warlord Roosevelt Johnson resulted in Johnson being shuttled from the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia to Nigeria, where he has been detained by authorities.
