August 25, 2018

Thursday

HLHF 59, Deshler 56

Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family opened the 2018 season on the right foot in a 59-56 win over Deshler on Thursday night.

Quarterback/running back Dillon Hanzel led the way with five touchdowns, 173 rushing yards and 173 more through the air. He scored on runs of 4, 6, 8, 16 and 27 yards.

His top target was Jason Sjuts with five catches for 102 yards and two scores. He took one in from 41 yards out and grabbed another touchdown for 15.

Ethan Hanzel piled up 83 yards receiving on just two grabs including a 60-yard score. Fellow quarterback/running back Bryce Classen added his own touchdown on a 50-yard run.

Zach Pfefier added three runs for extra points.

Defensively, Dylan Dohmen, Ayden Veik and Matthew Pfefier each made an impact.

HLHF trailed 30-21 after the first quarter and 44-41 at halftime before two third quarter touchdowns to just one for Deshler changed the lead for good.

Centura 21, Twin River 13

Twin River’s fourth-quarter comeback fell just short and the Titans opened the 2018 campaign with a tough loss at home on Thursday night, 21-13 to Centura.

A 45-yard pass in the second quarter by the Centurions, then a 30-yard completion early in the fourth had Twin River in a 14-0 hole with time running short.

Jaxson Hinkle hit Grant Swantek for a 3-yard score to cut the deficit in half but Centura responded with a 2-yard run into the end zone before Hinkle found Swantek for an 11-yard touchdown.

After just five first downs and 67 yards through the first two quarters, the Titans offense finally came together after halftime and put together 14 first downs and a total of 196 yards.

Curtis Miller led the way on the ground with 32 carries for 136 yards, Hinkle was 9 of 21 passing for 73 yards and Swantek grabbed six balls for 50 yards to go with his two scores.
