Heat 102, Trail Blazers 91
MIAMI (AP) _ Rony Seikaly, playing his second game since losing his starting job, had 24 points and 10 rebounds as the Miami Heat beat slumping Portland 102-91 Wednesday night - its first victory ever over the Trail Blazers.
The Trail Blazers, who have lost seven of their last 10 games, came in 11-0 against the Heat. Miami, which got 24 points from Glenn Rice, is in its fifth season in the NBA.
Portland got 20 points from Clyde Drexler and 18 from Rod Stickland.
Miami’s Steve Smith had 15 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists.
Also helping the Heat was a 12-for-16 performance from the free-throw line before Portland even got there.
Poor shooting plagued Portland all night. The Trail Blazers were 35 of 93.
Seikaly, replaced by John Salley before Tuesday’s 102-100 loss to Cleveland, came off the bench seven minutes into the contest and scored seven points during a 14-3 surge that put Miami up 29-18 with 1:03 left in the first quarter.
After a three-point play by Strickland, a basket by Seikaly ended the first period with Miami in front 31-21. The Trail Blazers got no closer than nine points thereafter.
Portland made only 4 of 18 from shots in the second quarter, enabling Miami build a 51-35 halftime lead.
A 3-point basket by Brian Shaw opened the second half and gave the Heat its biggest lead at 54-35.
