Rock River baseball: Lebanon cruises past Johnson Creek

JOHNSON CREEK — The Lebanon Whitetails continued their playoff push with a 7-1 win over the Johnson Creek Pioneers on Sunday at Firemen’s Park.

Lebanon improved to 8-5 in the Rock River League and sits in fifth place in the league standings after dropping third place Johnson Creek to 9-5.

Winning pitcher Matt Sabel threw six innings and earned the decision, allowing one earned run on two hits with seven strikeouts and eight walks. Mike Harshbarger threw three scoreless innings in relief, allowing no hits while striking out three and walking one.

The Whitetails led 2-0 after scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Shortstop Tyler Doyle tripled to right and scored on Harshbarger’s sacrifice bunt in the fourth. Second baseman Bryce Schuett singled in the fifth, advanced to third on a base hit by third baseman Cameron Schuett and scored on a sacrifice bunt from center fielder Zack Fenner.

Johnson Creek cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth. Alex David drew a leadoff walk and stole second, advanced to third on a groundout by Ray Lauersdorf and scored on Jake Oestreicher’s infield hit. Oestreicher had both hits for the Pioneers on the day.

Lebanon answered with a run in the sixth. Noah Zubke led off with a single, Harshbarger doubled to right and Kevin Firari hit a sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-1.

The Whitetails broke the game open with four runs in the seventh.

Cameron Schuett began the two-out rally with a single up the middle. Fenner hit an RBI single to right and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Doyle. From there, Zubke walked, Harshbarger singled to right, Firari hit an RBI single up the middle and Louis Demetropoulos also hit an RBI single up the middle.

Josh Braunschweig took the loss for Johnson Creek, allowing three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks over six innings. Cameron Walling allowed four earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk in three innings of middle relief. Clayton Uselman finished up with a scoreless ninth with three strikeouts and two walks.

Lebanon hosts Hustisford on Sunday.
