Plea hearing set for Alabama man in $2M scam

May 21, 2019

OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) — State prosecutors aren’t recommending additional jail time for a man who pleaded guilty in a nearly $2 million scam that sucked in nearly an entire Alabama town.

Court records show Lee County prosecutors are asking that a one-year state court sentence for Kyle Sandler run concurrently with a more than five-year federal prison sentence he’s already serving. That means he wouldn’t have to do added time.

The 43-year-old Sandler is due back in court next Tuesday in Opelika (Oh-puh-LIE-kuh) to plead guilty to a related state theft charge.

Sandler founded a business called The Round House in 2014 and sucked in dozens of investors. He promoted some new businesses but also admitted wrongly taking investors’ money.

Sandler portrayed himself as a wealthy former Google executive to snag investors.
