Hawthorn through to Australian Rules grand final
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Defending champion Hawthorn advanced to the Australian Football League grand final against Sydney with a 15.7 (97) to 13.16 (94) win Saturday over Port Adelaide.
Before more than 76,000 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Hawks dominated most of the match and led by 29 points midway through the fourth quarter before Port began a comeback attempt which fell just short.
Jarryd Roughead kicked six goals for Hawthorn.
On Friday, Lance Franklin kicked five goals to lead Sydney to a 19.22 (136) to 9.11 (65) win over North Melbourne. The Swans didn’t kick their first goal until the 16th minute when Adam Goodes, playing in his 350th game, booted a six-pointer.
The grand final is expected to attract a crowd of about 100,000 to the MCG next Saturday.
