GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — China has signed a deal pledging nearly $5 million to help Guyana’s military buy new equipment and improve training.

Officials said the money will be used only to buy non-lethal items, including medical supplies. The deal was signed late Tuesday.

The South American country established diplomatic ties with China in 1972. Guyana officials noted that high-ranking police officers also have received training in China in recent decades.
