City of Pocatello looking at making it illegal to text or operate mobile device while driving

November 6, 2018

At the Thursday, November 8 Pocatello City Council Work Session, Council members will be looking into a proposed ordinance that aims to prevent distracted driving in the Gate City.

Under the proposal, texting or operating a mobile device would be punishable as an infraction. Exceptions are provided for using a device in a “voice-operated or hands free mode” as a navigational aid and for emergency response personnel. The ordinance is similar to one enacted by the City of Idaho Falls in early October.

A copy of the ordinance is available at pocatello.us/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Item/1693?fileID=5424.

The Work Session is not a public hearing and public comment will not be accepted at the meeting. Residents who would like to comment on the proposal can submit their comments to the City Council at pocatello.us/FormCenter/Mayor-City-Council-6/Email-the-City-Council-61 or by phone at 208-234-6163.

The Work Session is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. The meeting will be live-streamed at pocatello.us/717/Government-Access and can be viewed on Government Access Channel 56.

City Hall is accessible to persons with disabilities. Program access accommodations may be provided with three (3) days’ advance notice by contacting Skyler Beebe at sbeebe@pocatello.us; 208.234.6248; or 5815 South 5th Avenue, Pocatello, ID.
