TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ North Dakota State football Coach Don Morton, the winningest active coach in NCAA Division II, formally was named Monday as the new head coach of the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

Morton, 37, replaces John Cooper, the former Tulsa coach and athletic director who took the same positions at Arizona State March 6.

Tulsa, a Division I program, received more than 60 applications and interviewed eight men for the head coaching job. School administrative officials will retain Cooper’s duties as athletic director.

″Don Morton brings to Tulsa a strong and successful record,″ University of Tulsa President J. Paschal Twyman said Monday. ″He is a highly organized individual and possesses great knowledge of the game.

″Don was selected from an impressive list of candidates, and we are pleased that he accepted the position,″ Twyman said.

Morton, a 1969 graduate of Augustana College, has compiled a 57-15 record for a winning percentage of .792. His North Dakota State Bison won the NCAA Division II title in 1983 and advanced to the finals in 1981 and 1984.

Formerly an assistant at the North Dakota school to Jim Wacker, now at Texas Christian, Morton is a proponent of the veer offense. The two-back, ground-oriented attack was employed by Cooper at Tulsa.

Last season, Morton’s Bison led Division II in total offense with 455 yards a game and scoring with 39 points a game. His teams have been among the leaders in rushing offense for the past five seasons.

″The committee has worked hard to identify the best possible head football coach to further refine our football program and build on the successes we have had in the past seven years,″ said Vince Butler, chairman of the Tulsa search committee.

″Don Morton’s record to date demonstrates he is a winner,″ Butler said.

Morton said he would relocate his family to Tulsa by next weekend and would begin spring football practice on Monday
