Kazakh city of Almaty to host weightlifting worlds
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Almaty will host the weightlifting world championships in 2014 in a switch from Kazakh capital Astana.
The International Weightlifting Federation says the venue was changed following discussions with the Kazakh federation.
Almaty will host the championships — a qualifying event for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro — from Nov. 8-16. The competition will follow several days of meetings, including the IWF Congress.
The Kazakh Olympic Committee proposed Almaty as a 2022 Winter Olympic host last Friday. The city will compete with Beijing; Krakow, Poland; Lviv, Ukraine; Oslo, Norway; and Stockholm.
