Frequent rescues from Huntington Ravine trail this summer

July 28, 2018

PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire’s Fish and Game Department says trail maintenance projects have caused hikers to seek alternate routes to the summit of Mount Washington, which may be resulting in more rescue calls.

The department says Huntington Ravine has been a consistent producer of rescue calls this summer, when many groups have been taking the Huntington Ravine Trail instead of the Tuckerman Ravine Trail to the summit. The Huntington Ravine Trail is considered one of the most difficult in the White Mountains, and rescues from there are always long and difficult.

Five hikers became stranded on the Huntington Ravine Trail on Thursday night. Conservation officers and search-and-rescue volunteers responded to the remote location. The hikers were found and made it back early Friday.
