Hayden scores twice as Dragons defeat Pointers
SOUTH POINT, Ohio — Erinn Hayden scored two goals to lead Fairland (3-2-1) to a 3-1 victory over South Point (3-3) in high school girls soccer Wednesday at Alumni Stadium.
Maddi Miller also scored for Fairland.
Chesapeake alumni game to benefit cancer patient
CHESAPEAKE, Ohio — The Team Levi alumni basketball game at concert to benefit cancer patient Levi Delimpo, 10, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Chesapeake High School.
Levi is battling a rare form of bone cancer. Money raised will help pay for tests, treatments, procedures and hospital stays.
More than 50 former Panthers players have committed to play. Former Chesapeake coach Norm Persin also is expected to attend the three games.
Admission is $10.
Fairland boys win sectional golf title
McDermott, Ohio — Led by co-medalist Reece Bellville, Fairland won a district high school golf championship Thursday at the Portsmouth Elks Country Club golf course.
Belville shot 8-over-par, 80, on the 6,677-yard, par-72 course to tie Roark Brynden of Portsmouth West for medalist honors.
William Sturgill of Portsmouth finished third with an 81.
Fairland’s Clayton Thomas was fourth at 84.
Fairland’s Mason Manns, Gallia Academy’s Reece Thomas and Portsmouth West’s Brady Whitt tied for fifth, shooting 86.
Mikhail Auxier shot 87 to round out the Dragons’ score of 337.
“Four scores in the 80s on a rainy, dreary day laps the field by 23 shots,” Fairland coach Bryan Ward said. “I’m really proud of these guys.”
Fairland, which won the sectional title for the first time since 1999, advances to the district tournament at Crown Hills Golf Club in Williamsport, Ohio, on Wednesday.
Portsmouth West finished second with a score of 360. Gallia Academy was third at 362, followed by Minford at 396, Portsmouth at 436 and Wellston at 453.
