Expos Closer Urbina To Have MRI
MONTREAL (AP) _ Montreal Expos closer Ugueth Urbina was unavailable for Wednesday night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies after feeling pain in his right elbow while warming up the previous night.
Urbina, last year’s NL saves leader with 41, told team officials about the pain following the Expos’ 3-2 win Tuesday night. X-rays of the elbow were taken on Wednesday and an MRI will be performed on Thursday.
Urbina, 26, had bone chips removed from his right elbow in December 1996 after experiencing pain while pitching in his native Venezuela.
He struck out the side while recording his eighth save in his last outing, Sunday at Milwaukee.
Graeme Lloyd, signed as a free agent be to Montreal’s set man, hasn’t pitched this season. He had arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder May 4 and won’t return for at least three months.
Scott Strickland, the Expos’ current setup man, is on the disabled list because of right shoulder tendinitis.
