Man Charged in Two of Seven Shotgun Killings

February 14, 1991

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) _ A suspect in a series of seven shotgun slayings was charged today with murder in two of the killings.

Christopher D. Peterson, 22, of Gary was charged in slayings at a service station and a motel in the northwest Indiana city of Portage, said Porter County Prosecutor James H. Douglas. Both victims were shot in the head.

Charges have not been filed in the other five deaths.

Peterson is being held without bond in neighboring Lake County. He was arrested in the attempted armed robbery and wounding of a restaurant manager on Jan. 28.

The seven slayings in northwest Indiana occurred between Oct. 30 and Dec. 18. All the attacks were within a 20-mile radius of Gary.

Peterson was charged in the deaths of Harchand Singh Dhaliwal at a service station Dec. 13 and Marie Meitzler at a Howard Johnson Motor Lodge on Dec. 15.

The prosecutor said Ronald J. Harris, 22, of Gary was also charged in connection with Dhaliwal’s death for allegedly helping Peterson. Harris was charged with assisting a criminal and aiding and abetting murder.

Harris was arrested Feb. 7 by members of the task force investigating the slayings and appeared in Porter Superior Court on Tuesday.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Officer Mike Teeling confirmed published reports that Peterson has confessed to the seven slayings and that police have physical evidence linking him to some of the scenes.

Peterson was implicated in the shotgun slayings by Antwoin McGee, who was arrested with Peterson. Court records identified him as the driver in the attempted robbery of the restaurant manager outside a Merrillville bank.
