WCJC Foundation awards scholarships for 2018

August 20, 2018

WHARTON — Students who recently graduated from six area school districts are receiving a helping hand with their educational expenses thanks to the generosity of the Wharton County Junior College Foundation.

The foundation recently announced its 2018 Scholarship recipients. The students — representing Wharton, Boling, East Bernard, Needville, El Campo and Louise school districts — will each receive a $4,000 scholarship to attend WCJC. The funds will be split, with $2,000 awarded for the 2018-19 academic year and $2,000 for 2019-2020, provided the students comply with the scholarship requirements.

The purpose of the awards is to assist students who might otherwise be unable to afford higher education, said WCJC Foundation Board of Directors President Larry Wadler.

“Our goal is to encourage students to attend college, complete their program of choice and obtain a rewarding career with as little debt as possible,” Wadler said.

The 2018 award winners include:

Wharton High School — Brenna Garza and Claudia Mendez

Boling High School — Sarah Lynch and Dalaney Guttenberger

East Bernard High School — Lucy Talas and Claudia Zapalac

El Campo High School — Jillian Owens, Haley Strnadel and Cristina Mendez Hernandez

Louise High School — Jackie Garcia and Victoria Ochoa

Needville High School — Mackenzie Dornak and Lindsey Norman

To qualify for the scholarships, students had to be approved for graduation in 2018 from one of the six schools in the college’s service area. They also had to complete and submit a scholarship application, which includes the submission of an essay. Priority was given to students who demonstrated in their essay how a scholarship would enable them to overcome limited resources and financial constraints in order to attend WCJC.

Donations are accepted at any time to support the scholarship initiative. Funding to support a single student scholarship is $4,000. However, a donation of any amount is appreciated and will go towards funding the program. Donations are tax deductible as the foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization. Donations may be mailed to the WCJC Foundation, 911 Boling Highway, Wharton, Texas, 77488. For more information, call 979-532-6304.
