Struggling Maine town votes to keep own fire department

April 4, 2018

MEDWAY, Maine (AP) — A Maine town struggling with a shortage of firefighters has voted to keep its own fire department, despite a proposal to pay another community to share them.

The Medway Board of Selectmen voted Monday to hire interim Fire Chief Aaron Lee as the town’s fire chief and to keep the department intact. The Bangor Daily News reports the town had been considering a proposal from East Millinocket to share firefighters.

Residents at a special Medway town meeting voted 37-5 on March 27 to reject East Millinocket’s proposal to provide firefighters for Medway at an annual cost of $80,600.

Town Administrative Assistant Kathy Lee in Medway says its total fire department budget is $65,000. She believes voters thought that continuing their own department would be worth it.
