BRISBANE, Australia (AP) _ American Pablo Morales, the world 100-meter butterfly champion, will oppose former Australian Olympic gold medalist Jon Sieben in the Queensland Swimming Championships at Chandler Pool in January.

Queensland Swimming Association chairman Greg Lalor said Tuesday that Morales and three other swimmers coached by California-based Mitch Ivey would compete in the event Jan. 9-17.

Sieben won the gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and was runner-up to the 22-year-old Morales in the 100-meter butterfly at the Pan Pacific meet in Brisbane in August.

NEW YORK (AP) - Rodolfo Gomez of Mexico and Dan Schlesinger, the 2-3 finishers in the 1982 New York City Marathon, have entered this year’s event Nov. 1, race director Fred Lebow announced Tuesday.

Gomez, 36, waged a strirring duel with Alberto Salazar in the New York City Marathon five years ago, when he finished second to the American in two hours, 9 minutes, 33 seconds. This will be Gomez’ first New York City Marathon since that race. His best time is 2:09:12 in finishing third at Tokyo in 1983.

Gomez has won marathons at Tokyo, Rotterdam and Athens, plus Pittsburgh this May in 2:13:07.

Schlesinger, 37, won the Duluth Marathon this June in 2:16:00, and in October, he captured the Staten Island Half-Marathon in a course-record 1:05:09. Schlesinger’s career best is 2:11:36 at Boston in 1983, when he finished eighth.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (AP) - Carla McGhee, a Tennessee women’s basketball player injured in a car accident Oct. 11, will leave the hospital this week to recuperate at her Illinois home, school officials said Tuesday.

McGhee, a sophomore forward for the defending NCAA champions Lady Volunteers, probably will be released Wednesday or Thursday from Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville to recuperate at her home in Peoria, Ill., said her academic adviser, Kerry Howland.

She suffered a fractured jaw and cheekbone in the accident. McGhee’s jaw has been wired shut, and she has had surgery on her cheekbone, team officials said. She is not expected to return to the team until January.

Also injured in the accident were Tennessee junior forward Dyron Nix and McGhee’s roommate, Phoebe Walton, who both were treated and released from the University of Tennessee Memorial Research Center and Hospital.

A Knoxville family also suffered injuries in the accident. Delphy J. Nypaver, 25, is listed in stable condition at the university hospital. Her father, mother and brother were treated and released from the hospital.
