Mass. school’s district’s solar plan hits a snag

August 13, 2013

YARMOUTH, Mass. (AP) — A Cape Cod school district’s plan to meet all of its energy needs with solar power has hit a roadblock after the local Zoning Board of Appeals denied the required special permit for the project.

The plan calls for the installation of roof- and ground-mounted solar arrays on Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District properties in both towns.

Planners in both communities gave the project the go-ahead, but the Yarmouth Zoning Board of Appeals denied a permit last week.

Board Vice Chairman Sean Igoe tells the Cape Cod Times (http://bit.ly/1cK6Stn ) the denial was based on concerns over safety and public welfare. He says the board envisioned children climbing fences around ground panel arrays.

School Superintendent Carol Woodbury was surprised and disappointed by the decision.

Supporters have 20 days to appeal.
