Two Cops Killed in Ga. Standoff
AUSTELL, Ga. (AP) _ Two police officers were shot to death in a standoff that continued today outside the suspect’s suburban home.
Cobb County police Sgt. Steve Reeves and Officer Steve Gilner were killed as they stormed the home late Friday to arrest the man, who allegedly shot another officer hours earlier, said police spokesman Andrew Marchetta.
The officer shot earlier was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.
The suspect, whose identity was unknown, remained holed up inside the home early today, authorities said. There were unconfirmed reports from neighbors that his elderly mother was inside the home with him.
A motive for the attack wasn’t known.
``This is not the same (man) I’ve always known,″ Patricia Barnett, Jerald Barnett’s wife, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. ``He just went berserk.″
Austell is about 30 miles northwest of Atlanta.
