Man Accused of Having Shotgun in Car Outside Buchanan Appearance

March 11, 1996

IRVING, Texas (AP) _ A man who followed a motorcade carrying presidential hopeful Pat Buchanan, ignoring police who tried to wave him off, was arrested after officers found a shotgun in his car, authorities said.

Nickolas Owens, 34, of Arlington, faced arraignment today on a charge of unlawfully possessing a weapon in a place where weapons are prohibited _ namely, a college campus.

Owens was detained Sunday night at the University of Dallas as the Republican columnist arrived for a campaign appearance, police spokesman David Tull said.

``The motorcade was moving and he was right behind the last car,″ Tull said. ``He went right on in with them and disregarded the officer who waved him off.″

Police stopped his car and found the gun, which was in plain view in the front seat, Tull said. He didn’t know if the gun, believed to be a 12-gauge, was loaded.

``The whole thing was done without incident, so I don’t know what the intentions were,″ Tull said. ``He didn’t give the officer any trouble.″

Buchanan, asked about the arrest, looked surprised, saying, ``I don’t know anything about that.″

There was no answer Sunday night at a telephone listed in Arlington for Nick Owens.
