DIST. 2 SOFTBALL: Fritz’s Blast Helps Dunmore Reach Class 3A Semis

May 22, 2019

DUNMORE — When you’ve faced pitchers who throw 60 mph, it’s not easy to adjust to a soft tosser.

Dunmore’s Meghan Fritz did that, just when her team needed it most.

The junior crushed a first-pitch offering for a three-run homer to centerfield in the bottom of the sixth inning, helping the third-seeded Lady Bucks pull away from Meyers, 8-3, in Tuesday’s District 2 Class 3A quarterfinal at Schautz Stadium.

Dunmore advances to visit rival Mid Valley on Thursday at 3 p.m.

“I wasn’t really hitting in the beginning of the game because she’s slower than most of the pitchers we’ve been playing,” Fritz said. “Coach (Michelle) Ross told me to move up in the box and I think that just made me hit the ball.”

It was the second homer in three games for Dunmore’s hurler.

Dunmore jumped to a 4-0 lead, three in the first as Megan Pavlowski delivered an RBI single to break the ice, the first of her three hits.

“It was a good start to the game and we got going after that,” Pavlowski said. “I think it rallied everyone up.”

Dunmore went flat after that, and Meyers chipped away, pulling within 4-3 in the fifth on two errors and singles by Lael Walker, one of her three hits, and Lyssa Rhodes.

Pavlowski helped quell the comeback with a leadoff double in the fifth and Sophia Mandarano drove her home to make it 5-3.
