BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) _ Jeff Phelps tackled Bowling Green’s Courtney Davis at the 1 on a fourth-down pass with less than a minute left and Ball State held on for a 16-11 victory Saturday.

Phelps also sacked Falcons quarterback Bob Niemet for a second-quarter safety as the Cardinals (4-3, 3-1 Mid-American Conference) scored nine points in less than a minute late in the second quarter.

Brent Baldwin’s second touchdown pass, a 31-yarder to Brent Campbell with 24 seconds left in the first half, gave Ball State a 16-7 lead. Baldwin, who completed 13-of-22 passes for 197 yards with no interceptions, earlier hit Ed Abernathy on a 26-yard scoring pass.

Bowling Green (4-3, 3-2), which scored first on a 10-yard pass from Niemet to Terry Loville, pulled to 16-9 in the third quarter when linebacker Joe O’Neill tackled running back LeAndre Moore in the end zone for a safety.

The Falcons took over at their 20 late in the game and moved to a first down at the Ball State 1 with 2 1/2 minutes left. Two runs by Davis lost a yard and on third down, Keylan Cates was thrown for a 3-yard loss by Damon Hummel.

On fourth down from the 5 with 56 seconds left, Davis caught a swing pass from backup quarterback Mark Molk, but was tackled at the 1 by Phelps.

Ball State then ran out the clock, with punter Brad Maynard stepping out of the end zone for another safety with four seconds remaining.
