Bus Wreck Sends 36 Children to Hospital
DYERSBURG, Tenn. (AP) _ A gravel truck rammed into a school bus that was slowing for a railroad crossing Tuesday, seriously injuring three children, authorities said.
Thirty-six youngsters and the bus driver were treated at Parkway Methodist Medical Center in Dyersburg, but only three were hurt seriously enough to be admitted, said Melvin Walker, the hospital’s administrator.
The three suffered broken bones, but the injuries were not life threatening, he said.
The bus was hit from the rear and jolted several hundred feet along Tennessee Highway 20 near Finley, said Tansil Phillips, a Highway Patrol trooper.
No charges will be filed until an investigation is completed, Phillips said.
The accident occurred as the children were being taken home from an elementary school in the Dyersburg area, said Dyer County Deputy Tommy Stafford.
