DIXON – Dixon High School math teacher Ryan Hoffman will be playing piano and guitar and singing a variety of songs, from rock to showtunes, from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the bookstore and coffee shop at 202 W. First St.

Free winter pops concert

STERLING – Sterling Municipal Band’s free Winter Pops concert begins at 7 p.m. Friday at Abiding Word Church, 806 E. Lynn Blvd.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and an optional reception begins at 6:30 that includes hors d’ oeuvres before the concert and a dessert bar at intermission, when the barbershop quartet Spontaneous Combustion will perform.

The cost of the reception is $25 per person. Reservations are required by Dec. 21 at 815-590-5566, or mail a check to Sterling Municipal Band, 212 Third Ave., Sterling, IL 61081. Include your name, address, phone number, and email.

In celebration of local art

DIXON – The 15th Regional Survey of Art, which showcases area artists and trends, opens Saturday at The Next Picture Show, 113 W. First St.

More than 90 original works – including acrylic, pencil, scanography, alcohol ink, mixed media, digital photography, pastel, oil, and watercolor – by 34 artists will be on display through Feb. 23.

A reception celebrating the exhibit and the artists begins at 6 p.m. Jan. 11 with music by Chuck and Bev Kearns of Oregon.

First Fridays in Mount Morris

MOUNT MORRIS – The First Fridays Open Stage music show returns to Mount Morris Moose Family Center, 101 Moose Drive.

Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. and the show at 7. Each musician or band performs for 15 minutes. Instruments are acoustic and a professional sound system is provided. The music will include country, bluegrass, blues, gospel, folk and soft rock. Food and beverages will be sold.

Admission is by donation. All musicians and spectators are welcome. Food and drink are available.

Celebrating the Epiphany

DIXON – St. Paul and Immanuel Lutheran churches present “Follow the Star,” an Epiphany Hymn Festival, at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 421 S. Peoria Ave.

Praise Bands from each congregation will sing, accompanied by guest organist Karen Larson of Mount Morris. Refreshments also will be served.
