BC-BKC--Big 12 This Week
A look at the upcoming week around the Big 12 Conference:
GAME OF THE WEEKEND: Baylor at Kansas State. The Wildcats will win a share of the league title if they win out, despite falling at Kansas on Monday night. Baylor will be looking to secure an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, and beating K-State in Manhattan would go a long way in achieving that goal.
LOOKING AHEAD: The Jayhawks, hoping to rally and clinch their 15th straight conference title, play at Oklahoma State on Saturday. Kansas held K-State to just 49 points, the second-lowest total in the league this season, on Monday. ... Texas Tech travels to TCU, while Iowa State will face Texas in Austin. The Cyclones are 5-4 on the road this season. ... Oklahoma will host West Virginia. The Sooners’ postseason hopes would take aa serious hit if they lost to the Mountaineers, who are just 3-12 in Big 12 games.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jordan McCabe, West Virginia. The freshman, who as recently as Feb. 9 played just 10 scoreless minutes in a loss to Texas, scored 25 points with 11 rebounds in Monday’s 104-96 triple overtime win over TCU. McCabe averaged 19.5 points over his last two games after not reaching double figures all season, and his development could be a bright spot for a program in need of one.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Dedric Lawson of Kansas will enter the weekend leading the league in scoring (19 points a game) and rebounding (10.3 per game). ... Davide Moretti of Texas Tech entered Wednesday’s game against Oklahoma State ranked first in the conference by shooting 45.8 percent on 3s. ...Tech’s strong defense has overshadowed a similar effort by Kansas State. The Wildcats are allowing just 59.5 points a game.
ON WOMEN’S SIDE: No. 1 Baylor clinched the outright league title with a 73-60 win at Iowa State on Saturday. But Cyclones senior Bridget Carleton made her case to be named player of the year with 28 points. Carleton leads the league with 22 points a game on 47.1 percent shooting.
