Bakersfield St 89, Jacksonville St 59
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) _ Led by Tyrone Pollard with 19 points, Bakersfield State beat second-ranked Jacksonville State 89-59 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II basketball tournament on Thursday.
Bakersfield State (26-6) now faces third-ranked Virginia Union (28-3), which defeated Kentucky Wesleyan 81-69 on Thursday.
The 18th-ranked Roadrunners held a scant 39-36 lead over Jacksonville State (28-2) at the half. Then Russell Jarvis, a 6-foot-10 senior center from Winchester, Mass., who finished with 15 points, took over for the California squad.
Jarvis opened the second half with two quick jumpers, three rebounds, an assist and two deflections to spark Bakersfield State’s 17-6 run. Pollard contributed five points to the spurt.
Bakersfield’s swarming defense held Jacksonville State, which had been averaging 100 points a game, scoreless from the field for 10 minutes. Finally Willie Williams broke the drought with a jam with 5:55 left but Bakersfield was fully in control 70-50.
Willie Fisher led all scorers with 24 points for Jacksonville. The Gamecocks shot a dismal 14.7 percent in the second half and 29.7 percent for the game.
Fred Eckles had 18 points and Beau Redstone 17 for Bakersfield State.
