Foster Elementary School fifth-graders make holidays merry for troops
Students at Foster Elementary School put their Halloween candy to good use last week, donating hundreds of pounds to Sawyer Hendrickson’s efforts to fill the stockings of U.S. Armed Forces troops stationed outside the country and away from home.
To make sure the troops’ holidays are merry — wherever they might be — Hendrickson has been sending Christmas stockings to military bases around the world for the second year in a row.
It’s not something the 9-year-old can do without help, however, and that’s where her fellow Foster students came into play, donating a total of 321 pounds of candy to Hendrickson’s cause.
“That will be enough to fill 1,800 to 2,000 stockings,” said Sawyer’s mother, Heather Hendrickson. “They’ve just been dropping it off non-stop since Halloween.”
The kids had some incentive, however, thanks to Pat Patterson, owner of Hungry Howie’s.
