Police Name Suspect in Tuesday Night Merrimack Street Shooting
LOWELL -- Police identified 40-year-old Jose Aponte as the alleged suspect in a Tuesday night shooting on Merrimack Street.
In a Wednesday morning press release, police named Aponte, a Lowell resident, as the suspect and published his photograph. Authorities said they reviewed eyewitness accounts and surveillance video.
Around 7 p.m. Tuesday night, Aponte allegedly approached the victim, a 35-year-old Lowell man, in an alley at 698-702 Merrimack St., intending to rob him. Aponte “shot (the) victim several times during the commission of the crime,” police alleged in the press release.
The victim was found with gunshot wounds to his abdominal area and transported to an area hospital and then to a Boston hospital for treatment, police said.
