Youth Sentenced for Killing Elderly Neighbors
PITTSBURGH (AP) _ A teen-ager has been ordered to serve three concurrent life prison sentences for the slashing deaths of three elderly neighbors.
Donald Zoller Jr., 15, apologized for the crimes during his sentencing on Tuesday, the first anniversary of the slayings of Edward Kalberer, 75; his wife, Mary, 74; and her mother, Anna Jacobs, 92.
Zoller, who lived next door to the three, had testified he struck Kalberer on the head with a wrench before killing him with a 15-inch knife. The boy, who could not recall killing the women, claimed the attack was triggered by what he interpreted as sexual advances by Kalberer.
But Common Pleas Court Judge Joseph Ridge, who issued the sentences, said, ″There is nothing I can see that can explain the crimes.″
