Shaughnessy Wins Gold Coast Opener

GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) _ Meghann Shaughnessy beat Spanish qualifier Nuria Llagostera-Vives 6-2, 6-2 Monday to reach the second round of the Australian Women’s Hardcourt Championship.

Shaughnessy, a semifinalist last year, is seeded fourth in this $170,000 tuneup for the Australian Open.

Top-seeded Venus Williams begins play Tuesday.

Nicole Pratt, an Australian who has lived in Florida the past four years, beat Lilia Osterloh 6-2, 6-1. Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia defeated Bianka Lamade of Germany 6-1, 7-5.

Patty Schnyder of Switzerland downed qualifier Klara Kloukalova of the Czech Republic. Schnyder, a former Gold Coast champion, received a warning for a racket violation. After an extended heat break, she recovered for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory.
