Three Killed In New Year’s Eve Attack Blamed on Mafia Feud
AGRIGENTO, Sicily (AP) _ Investigators on Wednesday blamed feuding Mafia clans for a New Year’s Eve machine gun attack on a bar that left three people dead and seven wounded, including a child.
Four attackers burst into the cafe in the town of Palma di Montechiaro in southern Sicily and opened fire with machine guns and pistols, according to police.
Police said the target of the commandoes apparently was the bar’s owner, Felice Allegro, who was mortally wounded. His 9-year-old grandson was among the wounded.
One attacker was killed, and investigators believe he was slain by an armed guard who happened to be in the bar. They were quoted by Italian news agencies and state television as saying that the bar owner allegedly belonged to one of two rival Mafia clans in the town. The owner’s brother was gunned down three years ago.
