DAVIE, Fla. (AP) _ Miami Dolphins backup quarterback Craig Erickson was placed on injured reserve Wednesday with a torn ligament in his right elbow and will miss the rest of the season.

The injury could require reconstructive surgery, Erickson said. He'll be evaluated further before undergoing surgery in the next few days, and rehabilitation is expected to take six months to a year.

Erickson, a seven-year veteran, had been inactive for every game this season because of the injury.

``We gave it a considerable time to heal,'' he said. ``It didn't progress the way we wanted it to. There's some soreness, especially after throwing the ball.''

The roster move leaves Damon Huard as the only backup to Dan Marino. Huard, a second-year pro, has yet to throw a pass in the NFL.

``I'm very confident,'' Huard said. ``You have to be to be successful in this league.''

The Dolphins (5-2), who lead the AFC East, play at Buffalo on Sunday.
