Alcorn St. Beats Southern U. 56-47

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) _ Rasaan Powell scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lift Alcorn State to the Southwestern Athletic Conference title with a 56-47 victory over Southern University.

Natasha Dennis and LaToya Johnson scored 12 points each for the Lady Braves, who earned their first tournament title in four years and their first trip to the NCAA tournament since consecutive appearances in 2000-01.

Alcorn State (21-8) never trailed despite a 32-point effort by Rolanda Monroe of Southern (15-15), who earned tournament MVP honors. She tied her career high, and finished with a 28.6 scoring average for the tournament.

Alcorn State took an early 10-0 lead, holding the Jaguars scoreless through the first 5 minutes. A 10-1 run extended the lead to 16 late in the first half, but Monroe scored the last five points of the half to trail 29-18.
