NEW YORK (AP) _ Rick Mirer, the No. 2 pick in the draft, earned his first AFC player of the week honors on Wednesday.
Mirer led the Seattle Seahawks to a 31-14 win over San Diego on Sunday, becoming the first rookie quarterback since Detroit’s Rodney Peete four years ago to earn weekly honors. He completed 25 of 40 passes for 282 yards and a touchdown.
Another Seahawk, punter Rick Tuten, was honored, earning AFC special team player of the week. Neil Smith of Kansas City was the conference’s defensive player.
Troy Aikman of Dallas, who was 18 of 23 for 317 yards in a 36-14 win over Green Bay, was the NFC offensive player.
Eric Allen of the Eagles, who returned an interception 94 yards for the winning touchdown in a 35-30 win over the Jets, was the NFC defensive player.
And San Francisco’s Dexter Carter, who scored on 72-yard punt return against Minnesota, won special team honors.
