Bombs Damage Courts, Mormon Chapels in Chile

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) _ Suspected leftist guerrillas exploded four bombs in Santiago and two provincial cities, causing damage but no victims at Mormon chapels and court buildings, police say.

Police said Friday that the overnight blasts at Mormon chapels in Santiago and Calama, a mining city 870 miles north of the capital, shattered window glasses were and damaged the roofs.

In Santiago, another explosion caused minor damage at a Supreme Court entrance. In La Serena, another bomb destroyed the main gate to the local Court of Appeals.

Police said pamphlets of the Lautaro Front, a small leftist guerrilla group, were found at the blast sites.

Mormon chapels have been a frequent target for leftist guerrillas, who call the church ″a tool of Yankee imperialism.″

Mormon leaders deny political involvement. They point that more than half of Mormon missionaries in Chile are Chileans, not Americans.
