Dust Devils face challenge vs. Crusaders
MOHAVE VALLEY — The Dust Devils will play at 7 tonight in Phoenix against the Northwest Christian High School Crusaders in an Arizona Interscholastic Association 3A West Region football game.
The Crusaders’ record is 5-1 overall, 1-0 in region,
Northwest Christian beat the Wickenburg High School Wranglers 31-14 on Sept. 28.
Aren Van Hofwegen rushed for 161 yards on 26 carries against the Wranglers.
Van Hofwegen has rushed for 798 yards on 134 carries with six TD runs to lead the Crusaders’ offense. He is ranked No. 7 in rushing in the 3A conference.
The 2-4 overall, 1-2 in region Dust Devils beat the Kingman Bulldogs 48-6 at River Valley on Sept. 28.
“It was a sloppy victory, but at least it was a victory,” Dust Devils senior Seth Solano said. “There were a lot of offensive mistakes, defensive mistakes.
“It was all around a good win — first section win.
“Now, we have to go down and take it to Northwest Christian next week.”
Solano was not the only Dust Devil who saw room for improvement.
“We were a little sloppy,” Dust Devils junior Brenan Gladeau. “We started off slow, but at the end in the second half we regrouped and we got it and played our ball.”
Dust Devils head coach Jonathan Clark was impressed by the performance of RVHS junior quarterback Seth Christy against Kingman.
“I was very pleased,” said Clark by email. “We talked about it, and it was a focus throughout the week.”
Clark said Christy was more prepared against Kingman than he was during River Valley’s 50-12 loss to the Shamrocks at Yuma Catholic High School on Sept. 21.
“I told him I set him (up) for failure against Yuma by not preparing him,” said the first-year River Valley head coach. “I challenged him to practice hard and remain focused; he delivered a good game.”
