Puerto Rico probes death of drug-sniffing dog left in car
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Authorities in Puerto Rico say they are investigating the death of a government drug-sniffing dog left inside a car by an official with the island’s Department of Corrections.
The department’s interim secretary says a preliminary necropsy indicated the Labrador retriever died of a possible heart attack and asphyxiation. Jose Aponte Carro said Wednesday that the dog named Samson was trained to find drugs and had served the agency for five years.
He says the dog’s trainer told officials he left the car turned on with the dog inside while he participated in a training exercise. Aponte says the trainer told them he returned to find the car turned off and the dog dead.
