January 19, 2001

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) _ Virginia football coach Al Groh completed his coaching staff Friday, hiring Penn State linebackers coach Al Golden as defensive coordinator.

Golden, 31, also was the recruiting coordinator for the Nittany Lions last season. Before that, he was linebackers coach at Boston College from 1997-99, and a graduate assistant coach for George Welsh at Virginia from 1994-96, working with linebackers.

Golden is the ninth assistant hired by Groh, who left after one year as head coach of the NFL’s New York Jets to take over at his alma mater for Welsh, who retired Dec. 11.

The staff also includes offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, wide receivers coach Mike Groh, running backs coach Kevin Ross, offensive line coach Ron Prince, special teams coach Corwin Brown, assistant head coach and linebackers coach Dan Rocco, defensive line coach Mike London, and secondary coach Bob Price, the lone holdover.
