Devil’s Lake photo heads 2019 ‘Discover Wisconsin’ calendar

September 28, 2018

A photo of the setting sun peeking through a rock formation at Devil’s Lake State Park won its placement on the cover of the 2019 “Discover Wisconsin” calendar with the theme “Iconic Wisconsin.”

“Discover Wisconsin,” a tourism television show, publishes a calendar every year in partnership with the Wisconsin Counties Association featuring 12 photos of sights from around the state submitted by fans.

Another local destination, Gibraltar Rock near Lodi in Columbia County, was chosen for the month of November. Brad Bellisle of Oregon captured the landmark, earning a spot in the calendar for the second time. He said he tries to find places during his travels that get less attention from other photographers to help his chances.

“I know there’s some really talented people out there in Wisconsin, so having mine picked is, you know, quite an honor,” Bellisle said.

Kristen Finstad, “Discover Wisconsin” marketing coordinator, said the photo contest garners between 2,000 and 3,000 submissions each year, which she narrows down to about 10 for each month. Besides accounting for quality, Finstad makes sure no photographer is chosen for more than one month and no county is represented in more than one photo. She and other crew members make the final selections, taking into consideration votes by the public.

Taken by Nate Brack of Windsor, the photo of Devil’s Doorway at Devil’s Lake State Park will appear for the month of September.

Crew members picked Brack’s photo to be featured on the cover of the calendar as well as the cover of a 2019 Wisconsin Counties magazine issue.

Finstad said the calendar’s popularity comes from its familiarity to Wisconsinites, in addition to its general usefulness.

“Everyone needs (a calendar), first of all,” she said. “So you might as well have one that features beautiful photos and photos taken in your state — places you can actually visit and see in person. So I think just for that reason, seeing the photography, people are loving having those hanging on their walls over some calendar with generic places that they’ve never seen or will never see.”

Other counties highlighted in next year’s calendar are Door, Grant, Marathon, Brown, Burnett, Bayfield, Pepin, Sheboygan, Trempealeau and Ozaukee. The calendars are available for purchase at shop.discoverwisconsin.com.
