SYDNEY (AP) — The first-year, first-placed Western Sydney Wanderers moved five points clear in the A-League with three rounds remaining by beating the last-placed New Zealand Phoenix 2-1 on Sunday for their ninth consecutive win.
Japanese star Shinji Ono and striker Mark Bridge scored from penalties for the Wanderers, while Jeremy Brockie replied for Wellington. Bridge’s goal came in the 48th minute following a blatant handball by Vince Lia in the box.
Sydney FC, led by former Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero, helped out their fellow Sydney side by beating second-place Central Coast Mariners 2-0 on Saturday.
Melbourne Heart was to host Adelaide on Monday to conclude the 24th round.
