Ciro Wins Grade I Secretariat
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) _ Ciro, in his American debut, won the $400,000 Grade I Secretariat Stakes for 3-year-old colts at Arlington International Racecourse on Saturday.
Ciro, third in the Irish Derby after a pair of victories in France, was third at the top of the stretch. But Ciro quickly burst into lead and stayed in front to beat King Cugat, the 3-5 favorite, by a length.
Ciro, with Mick Kinane aboard, covered the 1 1/4 miles on turf in 2:01.64 to earn the $240,000 winner’s share in the eight-horse field.
Jerry Bailey, who rode King Cugat, also rode the winners of the Arlington Million and Beverly D. earlier Saturday.
Guillamou City was third, 5 1/2 lengths back.
Ciro paid $11.60, $3.40 and $2.10, King Cugat returned $2.40 and $2.10, while Guillamou City paid $2.20.
