Hannah Barker, 83, Hudson

Hannah Martha Barker, 83, Hudson, passed away at home Dec. 9, 2018.

Hannah was born Oct. 3, 1935, in Almena, Wisconsin, the second to the youngest of 18 children in the family of the Rev. Gerd J. Bents and Marie Stelter Bents. Her childhood was spent in a variety of places including Finley, Round Grove and Fernando, Minnesota, and Comstock, Wisconsin. She graduated high school in Cumberland, Wisconsin, and went to River Falls State College, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She married Oren Philip Barker on July 23, 1955. They spent their years working together in Afton, Minnesota; Whitewater, Wisconsin; Gaylord, Minnesota; Barron, Black River Falls, Randolph and Omro, Wisconsin. After Phil retired they moved to Portage, Wisconsin, then when Hannah retired they moved to Hudson, Wisconsin. Hannah loved children and spent many years teaching kindergarten and preschool. She retired as teacher and director of the Beaver Dam Nursery School in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Hannah was a talented artist and became a passionate rosemaler. She was an avid reader and Sudoku solver. She loved to play the organ or piano at home, and also listened to music throughout her days. Both Hannah and Phil loved their days spent at their “cottage” at the lake in Cumberland.

Surviving family members include her daughter, Debbie Barker of Cumberland; Randy (Amy) Barker of Delavan; grandchildren, Amanda (Jon) Tanke of Madison, Zachary and Emily Barker of Delavan; brother, Carl Bents of Cumberland; sisters, Marie Schillberg of Osceola, and Alma Hahn of Radcliff, Kentucky; and many, many other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Harm, Evert, Gay, Ted, Martin, Ulrich, Jan, Reinhold, Paul, Walter, Arnold and Rolf, and sister Esther Kettel.
