Paterson to pay $300K to settle racial discrimination suit

February 9, 2018

PATERSON, N.J. (AP) — Paterson has agreed to pay $300,000 to settle a black police officer’s racial discrimination lawsuit.

Lt. Washington Griffin claimed the city’s Internal Affairs Division failed to investigate his complaints that he was subjected to racist graffiti in the police headquarters bathroom and heard a fellow officer use a racial epithet about a black sergeant.

Griffin was suspended with pay on insubordination charges after he had a public dispute with the captain in charge of the division.

His lawyer tells The Record Griffin will retire as part of the settlement.

Police Director Jerry Speziale declined to discuss the details of the settlement. But he said there is no room for racism in the police department.
